I spent months worrying about my insulin getting too hot in Southeast Asia. Then a hostel in northern Vietnam solved that concern by freezing almost all of it.

I was travelling the Ha Giang Loop and had left my main supply in the hostel fridge. That felt responsible. I had protected it through airports, overnight buses and temperatures above 40 degrees. Unfortunately, somebody needed space for a can of Fanta and moved my insulin into the freezer.

The moment I found it

When I returned from the loop, I opened the freezer and saw the insulin. Panic arrived before any useful thought did.

Insulin is not a forgotten charger or a T-shirt you can replace at the next market. It is the medication keeping me alive, and I had carried enough for the rest of a long backpacking trip. I had done the organised thing, trusted the fridge and still ended up staring at frozen pens.

Official NHS guidance says insulin that has frozen should be discarded. Freezing can damage it even if it later thaws and looks fine. I did not want to gamble my glucose levels on a visual inspection and optimism.

The backup that stopped it becoming a disaster

Luckily, I had kept roughly a week’s supply separate for the motorbike loop. That decision gave me time to think instead of treating the problem as an immediate emergency.

I worked out how to reach Hanoi and replace the damaged supply. What had felt impossible from a hostel freezer became a series of smaller tasks: protect the insulin I still had, contact the right people, reach a major city and find a legitimate replacement.

What I would do differently now

I would never hand over a full supply without seeing exactly where it will be placed. Where possible, I would divide insulin between safe locations so one mistake cannot affect everything.

I also use FRIO cooling wallets a lot more often now. They use evaporation, so you soak them in water, rather than ice. This removes the risk of direct contact with a frozen ice pack. They are designed to keep medication within a cool room-temperature range, not at fridge temperature. For travel days, they also keep the cooling process under my control.

Travel does not fail when something goes wrong

This was stressful, expensive and avoidable. It was also useful evidence that a serious problem does not automatically end a trip.

Keeping insulin safe is not simply about stopping it from getting hot. Cold can damage it too. Pack backups, separate your supply and never underestimate what hostel staff will move for a beverage.
